NICHE this Week: 5 Things You Need to Know

As you kick off the week, here are five things making news in the cannabis industry:

  • NICHE Blog: O’Cannabiz Conference Tackles Changes and Challenges in the Industry; Billed as the largest cannabis conference in Canada since legalization, the O’Cannabiz Conference and Expo descended on Vancouver this week, as more than 100 industry leaders came together to address historic and emerging issues in the industry.

  • ICYMI: Months after saying it would not cap the number of licences for retail pot shops after cannabis was legalized, the Ontario government has reversed course, saying it will now only be able to issue 25 licences by April. As the CBC reports, the province says it plans to take a “phased approach” to authorizing retail cannabis outlets because of “severe supply shortages” across the country.

  • Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the biggest challenge associated with the legalization of cannabis has been the supply shortage — but he expects it to disappear within a year. As the Canadian Press reports, he noted the scarcity of cannabis was most pronounced in Ontario and Quebec.

  • A bilingual webinar hosted by Health Canada for professionals looking to apply for a cannabis micro-class licence generated substantial interest among participants. Here’s a look at what was presented.

  • Food for Thought: Despite the sustained protestations of Canada’s largest corporate cannabis growers, outdoor growing is coming to the country’s cannabis industry. As Now Toronto reports, some in the industry are predicting that in the future, the majority of grows will be greenhouse or outdoor.
